Peshtera
The village of Peshtera is very well developed, providing all necessary amenities; a post office, a medical center, a mobile service, cafes and shops and regular transport to the towns around the village which is situated, only 2km away from the town of Zemen, 29km away from the village is situated the famous historical town of Radomir and about 39km away is the town of Pernik. Within a short distance driving away from the village is located the capital city of Bulgaria – SOFIA. Peshtera Municipality is situated in the Western Rhodopes region of the Ossogovo - Rhodopes zone. Here are located parts of the Besaparski, Kurkarski and Batak Hills, which are cut by the valley of the Srata Reka River and its tributaries. Peshtera is 140 km away from Sofia and 45 km away from Plovdiv. All public buildings are supplied with natural gas. In the vicinity of the town there are a number of chapels, sprung in ancient times as Thacian consecrated grounds. There are two natural reserves in the municipality: Koupena Biospheric Reserve, which is of global importance and is under the protection of UNESCO. On its territory is the Dendrology Botanical Garden, where saplings of various ligneous species are grown: Colorado Spruce, sequoia, various types of fir-trees, golden cypress, meta-sequioa, and white ash. The Sokola (the Falcon) Reserve spreads over a territory of 1.27 sq.km. It is located 8 km to the west of Peshtera and south of St. Constantine Resort. It is rich in diverse game. Sokolovata skala (the Falcon Rock) is located there. There are a large number of caves in the area of Peshtera. Snezhanka and Yubileina attract the highest attention. Snezhanka Cave is one of the seven biggest caves in Bulgaria supplied with modern equipment. The cave is included in the list of Top 100 tourist sites in Bulgaria. Yubileyna Cave lies at 600 m. above sea level. Over 25 buildings have been declared monuments of culture: The Civil Rituals Hall, The Bulgarian-Russian Friendship Hall, Halil Mehmedov's Turkish house, the old Turkish school, the old clock, Razvitie "chitalishte" (arts, culture and literature center), the nunnery and other buildings in the region. St. Dimitar Church was recognized to be of national importance.
